Woronora winners everywhere!

Everyone paddled so well today, but our standout  was young Liam Rees in his first marathon. He has come a long way from his first paddle last year with the club to complete his first 10km in Division 9 and in a great time of 1.03.24.

Ryan Yerbury, also in Division 9 completed his first marathon too in 57.36.56, this was a ranking race for Ryan, so he did  not get a placing although his time meant he was the  winner. Julie Scholfield  was a happy placegetter in third  and our winners,  in Division 9, were Rod Smith and Kevin Newton.

Division 8 –  10km : Was the season debut of Alex Repetto who finished 4th, 10k is not far enough for you Alex. Jacquie Tang was 8th and would have had a better time had she not stopped for a swim. And Janet and Bruce claimed 2nd for SSCC.

Division 7 – 15km : Saw the first race of the season for Andrew Garvie, and what a way to start, sprinting home to win. With Michael Hagan in his first 15km race coming in 3rd.

Division 6 – 20km. Well Mitchell Hughes was first and daylight was second. Definitely will be going up a division next marathon! Mitchell claimed the hotspot sprint prize and also won this division in a 1.51 – great paddling Mitch.

Divison 2 – 20km. Arnold Graf, sprinted out of the blocks to win the hotspot prize and was travelling well but unfortunately suffered a minor shoulder aggravation and withdrew after 7k’s. Even though Arnold could not finish the race, he was able to stop and help a fellow paddler, a woman had fallen out of her kayak and was having difficulty getting it back to shore, Arnold assisted and the lady was very appreciative of the help at the time as she was getting worried about her predicatment. She passed on her thanks and regards for Arnold’s sportsmanship to the Event organisers, who inturn passed the compliments back to Rod Smith. We are all very proud of Arnold and our members and it is the mark of good sportsmanship as well as race rules to assist a fellow paddler in distress. Andrew Garvie also assisted a paddler last season at Windsor.  The rules allow for assisting a fellow paddler and your final time will be adjusted.

It was great to see so many family and friends watching the race, and especially good to sight Bryce and Emma by the river again.

The Busters are into second place on the standings after round 2 of the marathon series, thanks to the fine efforts of all our paddlers and coaches.
