Jacquie takes out Teacher Excellence award

Congratulations to club member Jaquie Tang- she was just awarded the best tafe TVET teacher at Ultimo Sydney Institute of TAFE 2014 for Teaching Excellence
( (tertiary vocational education and Training) Year 11 and 12)

We already knew you were sensational, great to get the recognition from your work colleges – we are all very proud of you.  Jacquie TangJacquieTang

GP3 Oceania – under 23 nationals and selections

GP3 – 3 days of competiton and three days of grey skies, rain, and a southerly but that didn't keep the smiles off the faces of our Busters. Everyone did very well with 8 1/2  pb's and everyone making a or b finals in at least one discipline. Full results below for our competing athletes.

Thank you to Brian, super coach and driver of the club trailer with all our gear – thank you Brian. Thanks also to our supporters, parents and friends who came out to watch  and cheer on the gang.

Our athletes learnt a couple of expensive lessons in following all the rules and checking every progression  – never assume anything, check twice! 🙂

Thank you to Australian Canoeing for running the event. Although we would like to see the prices come down on entry – $150 for an open racer ( anyone 18 and over) is just getting a bit exclusive. Kids at uni working jobs to pay for their courses and rent  are finding it a stretch to meet these costs.  No free uni for these kids.

Competitors, of whom 9 are also surf life savers included

Opens – Nick Dawe, Paul Bates

U/23's – Danielle Polson,

Luke Moses, Arnold Graf, Mitch Hughes, Robert Berzins, Sam Speer

u/18's – Danielle McMahon, Nikki Glasson

There are a lot of photos on our club facebook page if you want to see them 🙂

Sprint Canoe Nationals – Busters closing the gap.

Nationals this year was held in Adelaide and as a result a lot of planning goes into to getting the boats shipped over and back, finding accomodation, booking flights, trying to keep the costs down, getting time off work or university and of course last minute changes. We had 5 competitors, all open male : Nick Dawe, Arnold Graf, Mitch Hughes, Robert Berzins and Paul Bates. With them in support was our coach and mentor, Brian and Nick's girlfriend.

By all accounts, everyone raced well, times were slow for all competing, and no one was quite sure why. But that was the same for all, our Busters have improved their results and closed the gaps on their opposition. So chipping away where it counts and building for a stronger future in paddling. We have to remember our paddlers are relative 'newbies' to paddling only having a few years in K1's and have to do a few more k's on the water. So next stop is the winter strength and conditioning phase and the NSW marathon series. Full results below. Sorry for limited photos.

We also wish all our members competing at Aussies 2014 this week all the best. 🙂

Diverse, high achieving and a passion for paddling – is that you?

Paddlers are an interesting breed of people – very individual and Southside Paddlers are a great example of that. I found out how much so when chatting with a few of our paddlers at training last week and asked what direction they were taking after finishing school. Our club members are young and in the most in the 'education phase 'of their life – be it secondary or tertiary education – or just moving into the work force. We have 7 paddlers who have just finished their HSC, three in their final year at high school, and others still in the earlier years of high school. We have apprentices and full time uni-students reaching the end of their courses. Everyone of our paddlers ( and members)  are very indvidual and excel at their chosen passion – be it education, work, athletic skills, leadership, community, friendship, guidance and mentoring. Diversity and high achieving and share a common love of paddling are what make a southside paddler :

I won't put  who is doing what out of our members ( and this is not all members,)  . – just a list of what they are studying or their part time job. – Its your puzzle of the day to match the people to the occupation/degree 🙂

  • Music Education at the Conservitorium
  • Advanced Science Studies – UNSW
  • Electrical Engineering – UOW  –
  • Primary School Education  – ACU –
  • Website Design – Tafe  ( I know who can take over the club website now! 😉
  • Human Movement and Health Education – with a postgrad in Religious Studies –
  • Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine – Macquarie
  • Bachelor of Commerce – Marketing – UNSW
  • Paramedic and Life Guard
  • Environmental Science – ACU
  • Gap Year – Working hard in Hospitality
  • Apprentice at Tafe – Metal Fabrication

Marathon Rule changes

Each year we strive to make the paddling more interesting, and more enjoyable for everyone who participates (after all, it is a sport, and sport is meant to be fun!)

This year is no different, and again we have made some changes that we hope reflect the wishes expressed by the clubs and your paddling members.

  • A new Division (9) has been created for the 10km distance, for those 'quick" paddlers who can do the distance in less than 55 minutes. Note also that Div 10 is 55-60 minutes , and Div 11 is 60 minutes plus, for 10km.
  • Additional Club Points can now be earned by all paddlers who elect to paddle in International Class boats (K1/K2, C1/C2) and also by those paddlers in Div 2-11 who elect to portage.See Rule 13 for details.
  • Division 1 is now 25km with mandatory portage(where available) and reflects the work that our elite paddlers will be required to do when paddling at States or Nationals.
  • For consistency, and to be fair to all paddlers, rule 2.b reflects that ANY new doubles combinations will be required to paddle their first race as a  "ranking" race.
  • For paddlers wanting to move up to longer distances, Rule 4 now identifies Qualifying times that need to be achieved and hopefully gives you something to aim for.
  • Responding to feedback from the paddlers, Rule 5 reflects the revised Starting order. Clubs should note also that Division 7 will start 15 mins before Div 1, then 2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,11

We encourage you and  members to familiarise themselves with the Rules and changes, and we look forward to seeing you all on the water. We wish you and your members a successful year.

Southside Paddlers Holiday Sessions

Our coach is having a break over the silly season, starting this Saturday 21, where he and many of our paddlers will be at the North Cronulla Surf Life Saving  Christmas Carinval. Luke and Glen will be down the river this Saturday (21/12)  if you are planning to paddle.

During the holiday week or Christmas and New Year, there will be paddlers training. No one is to paddle alone.  Give your buddies a call to check availability and times. If you are out on the water, lock the shed as there will be limited supervision and holiday time is when the thieves are out and about.

From the Southside Paddlers Executive Committee – we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a very safe and happy holiday season.

A Message from Australian Canoeing

The AC office will be closed from the 20th December and will open again on the 6th January.

During this time please email info@paddle.org.au if you have any urgent issues.

Australian Canoeing would like to thank all of our members, supporters and volunteers for their tireless work during the year.

Happy holidays!

Brian Trouville – Cook Community Award

Brian Trouville – club president and coach, was given a Cook Community Award yesterday at Sutherland, he was unable to attend the presentation because he was doing what he got the award for…devotion to his club and looking after his charges in Adelaide at the Grand Prix event. Congratulations Brian from all the people who have been and will be in your circle of coached, mentored, coffee buddy, and friends.
