The 2013 Australian Junior Canoe sprint team was announced on Sunday following the conclusion of the National Championships In Perth. The 16-strong Junior team will compete in Welland, Canada at the Junior World Championships later this year. Mitchell Hughes, is one of 4 NSW athletes to have been selected, he is in year 12 at Wooloware High School.
Mitch’s results in the u/18 K1 1000 and K1 200, making both A finals, were the key to his successful inclusion in the team, ranking him second individual overall. His results in the K2 1000 and 200 with crew mate Robert, from Endeavour High School, gave him the bonus points he needed to end up ranked 5th Overall u/18 athlete in the meet. Other Southside Paddlers to excel at the National Championships were Arnold Graf and Sam Speer who were half of a composite club K4 crew to win gold in the u/23 200. Both athletes also produced pbs in the A Final of the K1 200. Nick Dawe also improved his pb in the Open mens K1 200. Full results here or on the link below.
