Southside Paddlers had a sunny but cool day to paddle the Woronora Marathon. Club entries were filled with first time marathoners and not so regular marathoners and marathoners trying different distances and different boat configuartions.
Our claim in points today was from the welcome return of Miss Danielle Polson to marathon racing, with a first place in D9. Kevin and Rod paddled a much more respectable time today and came 9th. Danielle McMahon and Jack Pethybridge had good first time races. Our other points came from Liam in his first 20km marathon. He came 4th, only 5 mins behind the winner….great comeback race Mr Rees, especially after giving the starters a 10min head start…..Another lesson to chalk up on the board, check starting times. 🙂 Technically Mitchell Hughes and his K2 partner for the World Junior Championships, Jayden Newell came first, but as it was there first race together in the series, it is another ranking race. Jayden is in Sydney this weekend to train with Mitch for the upcoming World Championships. We also had Aussie ski finalist and club member Sam Speers and World University Games Australian team member ( and club member) Nick Dawe come and train with the club today.
Well done to Julie Scholfield for tackling the bigger distance of 15k and to Jacquie for doing 10k on that very big surf ski. Jamiee Hughes only enjoyed the first lap of the marathon, the second lap was a bit harder, windy and cold, It will get easier ..so they tell me. And our new paddlers in D10, Alan Peatman, Jack Ford and Bruce Peters – good on all of you. Hope to see you all at the next marathon. Kevin and Rod had a much better paddle today – well done, a return to form!
Spectators enjoyed having coffee in the comfort of the new Arthur's by the River, or from the bridge viewing platform. It was nice to welcome new parents and extended family to southside today, some even having to get out their passport to gain entry from as far away as Manly ….:)
