Defib ( AED) will now be a club asset :) Priceless

Thank you to Tradies and Reponse for Life for providing our club with the opportunity to acquire a life saving device called and AED, defib or as made famous by Kerry Packer, the Packer Whacker! We will be collecting our new AED on Tuesday 30th at 5pm, we need 4 volunteers for the training and presentation. Please email me at southside.paddler@gmail.com if you are interested in attending.

I would also like to thank the indiviuals from the club ( you know who you are)  who kindly donated the money which meant we could acquire the machine. It had been decided that we would not use our club funds for this acquisition and that it must be separately raised. We have been able to do this and hence are getting the device.

Below is the original letter of offer from Tradies and a description of the AED and links to the various organisations.

Tradies is teaming up with Response For Life, a local not for profit organisation who aims to reduce Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) through the distribution of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). With the support of Response For Life, Tradies believes there is a clear need for access to appropriate life saving equipment such as defibrillators in public places, particularly at our local sporting clubs.

To address this need Tradies and Response For Life would like to provide Tradies sponsored sporting organisations with subsidised defibrillators packages. Tradies has pledged to subside up to ten defibrillators during 2013 for those local sporting organisations interested in acquiring such life saving equipment.

The cost of one defibrillator is $2,500 and Tradies has committed to subsidising 50% of this cost with sporting clubs contributing the outstanding $1,250. Response For Life have recommended the ZOLL AED Plus as their preferred defibrillators as it offers Real CPR Help, supports the Australia Resuscitation Council’s complete chain of survival and has the lowest total cost of ownership.

This product is also used by the NSW Rural & Metro Fire Service, NSW Ambulance and Virgin Australia. The purchase price also includes AED training, wall signage and paediatric pads (for children 0-8 years). Should Tradies receive an overwhelming response to this opportunity, sponsored sporting organisations interested will be considered on a needs basis.

Woronora Marathon 8th June

Southside Paddlers had a sunny but cool day to paddle the Woronora Marathon.  Club entries were filled with first time marathoners and not so regular marathoners and marathoners trying different distances and different boat configuartions.

Our claim in points today was from the welcome return of Miss Danielle Polson to marathon racing, with a first place in D9. Kevin and Rod paddled a much more respectable time today and came 9th.  Danielle McMahon and Jack Pethybridge had good first time races. Our other points came from Liam in his first 20km marathon. He came 4th, only 5 mins behind the winner….great comeback race Mr Rees, especially after giving the starters a 10min head start…..Another lesson to chalk up on the board, check starting times. 🙂  Technically Mitchell Hughes and his K2 partner for the World Junior Championships, Jayden Newell came first, but as it was there first race together in the series, it is another ranking race. Jayden is in Sydney this weekend to train with Mitch for the upcoming World Championships. We also had Aussie ski finalist and club member Sam Speers and World University Games Australian team member ( and club member) Nick Dawe come and train with the club today.

Well done to Julie Scholfield for tackling the bigger distance of 15k and to Jacquie for doing 10k on that very big surf ski. Jamiee Hughes only  enjoyed the first lap of the  marathon, the second lap was a bit harder, windy and cold,   It will get easier ..so they tell me.  And our new paddlers in D10, Alan Peatman, Jack Ford and Bruce Peters – good on all of you. Hope to see you all at the next marathon. Kevin and Rod had a much better paddle today – well done, a return to form!

Spectators enjoyed having coffee in the comfort of the new Arthur's by the River, or from the bridge viewing platform. It was nice to welcome new parents and extended family to southside today, some even having to get out their passport to gain entry from as far away as Manly ….:)

Narrabeen Marathon

A small group of Busters raced today at Lake Narrabeen. Sydney put on some beautiful conditions, fresh, lots of sun and clear blue skys. Overall the club is travelling in 5th place. But if you consider that there has only been 2 or 3 boats in each race representing the club this season, that is a fine result. Today we had 6 contesting the event. Mitch Hughes, 1st Division 8 ( 15km) paddle. Mitch is preparing for the Junior World Sprint Canoe Champs, so distance work is not part of his focus at the moment. His sister Jamie paddled in Division in her first ( ranking) marathon race.  Well done Jamie.  Robert won division 9 in 55min,  with Liam 10th  and Rod and Kevin  15th.

The next marathon is June 8th at Woronora. Hopefully we will have a near  full contingent of paddlers, but as it is a long weekend, I am guessing there will be a few away from Sydney.

Saving Lives through safer boating.

I started paddling when I was very little, I was only allowed out in the wooden canoe ( home made by my father, including the paddle) if I wore a life vest. This never inhibited me from learning to paddle. Just a reminder to all the Maritime rules are 'all paddlers under the age of 12, must be wear a life jacket'. And if you are a bit older, a life jacket is ok too. If you are not a confident swimmer, or even if you are, a life jacket is not a hinderance. Today's life jackets can be very comfortable.

Boat for Life is a new website about boat safety, and the first rule of safety is

Wear a life jacket – a great piece of advice – see this website for more details.  One of your most important pieces of equipment is your life-jacket. It needs to be correctly fitted so it doesn’t float up over your head should you capsize. A correctly fitted lifejacket supports your body upright and allows you to recover or wait for rescue.

Don’t leave it in the boat or on the shore, or even ask the coach if it is ok for you not to put it on your child,  because accidents can and do happen. If you capsize, your lifejacket is no use to you if it is in the boat or back in the car. Without a lifejacket you can waste a lot of energy to stay afloat, and this can quickly become life-threatening.

A lifejacket helps prevent you panicking so you can regain your composure and recover more easily.

Champion Lakes is for Champion Southside Paddlers!

The 2013 Australian Junior Canoe sprint team was announced on Sunday following the conclusion of the National Championships In Perth. The 16-strong Junior team will compete in Welland, Canada at the Junior World Championships later this year. Mitchell Hughes, is one of 4 NSW athletes to have been selected, he is in year 12 at Wooloware High School.

Mitch’s results in the u/18 K1 1000 and K1 200, making both A finals,  were the key to his successful inclusion in the team,  ranking him second individual overall. His results in the K2 1000 and 200 with crew mate Robert, from Endeavour High School, gave him the bonus points he needed to end up ranked 5th Overall u/18 athlete in the meet.  Congratulations Mitch and Robert on some great racing and lots of pb;s

Other Southside Paddlers to excel at the National Championships were Arnold Graf and Sam Speer who were half of a composite club K4 crew to win gold in the u/23 200. Both athletes also produced pbs  in the A Final of the K1 200. Nick Dawe also improved his pb in the Open mens K1 200. Full results here or on the link below.

It’s Marathon season again !

Picking up from Last year where we left off. Terrific results today from a small band of paddlers for Southside.

Firstly we had 2 first in Division 8 and 9.

Rhett in his first 15k race won division 8 in 1.14.41. Well done Rhett

Liam paddled a huge pb with a 53.03 to win the 10k Division 8

Emma, who is trying to overcome a persistant injury, was just outside the points. Emma, we are so proud of you and that you give it a go, 🙂  🙂 Persistance will pay off. Stick with it girl! 🙂

Our newbie, young Mr Berzins, won Division 9 in a 51.41. Great paddle Robert, but you do know this means you will have to paddle 15k next time! 🙂

And our youngsters, Rod and Kevin,  ever consistent paddled a 1.02.

At the point of writing I could not get the overall club results, but with 2 wins that is 16 points to get us off the mark. Hope you all had a good day out to Canberra. Back at the club, we had some great 200 and 2k racing from the sprinters preparing for the Nationals in 2 weeks. And we do love those new club stickers on all the boats!

Thank you to Jacquie for the great rock cakes today, yuuuuummmmmy. So pleased to see Michael H out having a paddle. 🙂

See you all next week! 🙂
